Nutmeg is a spice from the fragrant nutmeg tree. The dark-leaved evergreen tree is native to Indonesia and also grows in the tropics of coastal areas, like the islands of Malaysia and the Caribbean. The pear-shaped fruit hold the inner seed, the nutmeg, and is covered by mace, a red lace-like substance. The mace has a similar flavor but it is more delicate.

Too much nutmeg in food can be hallucinogenic and even fatal. Fortunately, in perfume it is perfectly safe and even very pleasant.
