The history of orange

Did you know that the orange is a hybrid between pomelo and mandarin? The sweet orange tree was first cultivated in China and used mainly for medicine practices. The fruit reached Europe around the 11th century, but it was not until the 15th century that people actually started eating the fruit.

Nowadays orange is the most popular citrus fruit in the world today. It is widely used in the food industry, including its essential oil to add flavor to desserts and sweets, for example. Also the beauty industry loves to add the scent of orange to beauty products like body lotions, soaps and creams.

In the perfumer’s palette there are five popular types of oranges used: sweet orange, bitter orange, blood orange, grapefruit and mandarin orange.

Orange essential oil is produced through cold-pressing of the outer orange peel. Curious to smell the essential oil of sweet orange? Just scratch the waxy orange peel to get that zesty sweet citrus fragrance, so uplifting and refreshing!
