Although petitgrain comes from the same tree as neroli and bitter orange, all of them have their very own fragrance character. Neroli is made from the blossom of the tree, whereas bitter orange oil comes from the peel of the fruit, and petitgrain is the essential oil extracted from the leaves and the twigs of a citrus tree.

There are three varieties of petitgrain:

• Petitgrain bigarade is distilled from the bitter orange tree
• Petitgrain mandarin from the mandarin tree
• Petitgrain citronnier from the lemon tree
