The origin of grapefruit

Grapefruit, citrus paradisi, is a subtropical citrus tree, originating in the Caribbean. Its history is fairly short as the discovery only goes back to the 15th century when the fruit was brought to the Americas. People started planting the tree around 1820 in Florida mainly because they loved the appearance of the tree: tall, with beautiful green glossy leaves, white four-petaled flowers and yellow-orange fruits. Once they discovered it had a delicious taste as well, grapefruits were shipped across the nation, and the rest is history.
