Lily of the valley

The lily-of-the-valley, also known by its French name, muguet, is a 30 cm woodland flowering plant. Other names for this flowers are: May bells, Our Lady’s tears and Mary’s tears.

The flowers are sometimes also used as ground cover in gardens, because it grows closely together, forming a dense mat with nodding bell-shaped white flowers and deep green glossy leaves.

Fun facts about lily-of-the-valley...

  • The origin of lily-of-the-valley is biblical: legend has it that Eve’s tears turned into lilies of the valley after her expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
  • In the Victorian language of flowers, lily of the valley meant “return of happiness.”
  • It’s said to bring luck in love. The lily of the valley is quite often used in bridal bouquets at royal weddings.
